Over 20+ years of teaching English and Spanish, I've created various language-learning hacks that have inspired confidence in my students and teacher colleagues. I look forward to sharing these methods with the world! I have extensive knowledge in effective teaching as well as in the modes of linguistics: phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics.
There has been a stigma around grammar as a way of acquiring a language, claiming that all one needs is immersion. However, that claim likely comes from approaches that haven't found the right way to make it engaging. My students have found that grammar is not boring after all — in fact, it's a lot of fun to learn! To understand grammar is to build a strong linguistic foundation, on which to build competent communication in speaking and writing, so that reading and listening comprehension becomes achievable.
My students not only sound more like native speakers compared to their peers — more importantly, they are able to take the constructs they've learned and autonomously apply them for the rest of their lives on any given topic, just like I have in my own language acquisition journey.
I myself am not a native Spanish speaker. Like many residents of the United States, I started out learning Spanish in the requisite two years in high school. However, true comprehension and fluency did not come until there was a personal need — for me, that was to win a better job position.
